Installation system

Correct installation protects the value of the roof system.

A practical overview for specifying IKO asphalt shingles with proper waterproofing, fastening, ventilation, and finishing details.

Method matters

Five decisions that shape the result.

1. Inspect and prepare the roof deck

Verify structural condition, moisture levels, and slope requirements before installing any waterproofing or shingles.

2. Install drip edge and underlayment

Use drip edge on eaves/rakes and install the appropriate underlayment system according to slope and weather conditions.

3. Place starter strip and field shingles

Start at the eaves and move upward with offset patterns and correct nailing zones to maximize wind resistance.

4. Protect valleys, hips, and ridges

Reinforce critical transitions with proper flashing, valley method selection, and ridge/hip accessories.

5. Final inspection and sealing checks

Confirm alignment, fastening, flashing terminations, and overall water-shedding performance.

Technical notes

  • Recommended minimum slope depends on the full system and accessories.
  • Concrete and wood decks use different preparation details.
  • High-wind zones require stricter fastening and sealing practices.
  • Valleys and roof penetrations are the highest-risk leak points.
